According to legend a mediaeval Italian monk carrying a bowl of copper shavings through the monastery workshop stumbled and spilled the whole lot into a bubbling vat of molten glass. The other monks berated him for ruining the glass, but when it cooled they were surprised to find that it had a rich golden color and beautiful sparkle, and decided that the 'accident' must have been Divine intervention.
