Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is a very magical stone that has been renowned since ancient times for its power and beauty. The stone has a rich, dark blue color that is often studded with tiny golden sparkles of Iron Pyrite (Fool's Gold) and cloudy nebulae of white Calcite, resembling the star studded night sky. Lapis Lazuli is used in magic to symbolize the heavens and call upon the powers of Night.

Lapis Lazuli was sacred to Laz, an ancient Goddess of Love, to the Babylonian Goddess Ishtar and later to the Egyptian Goddesses Nuit and Isis. A piece of Lapis Lazuli can be used as a charm to call upon various Goddesses of love and sexuality if you need their aid, and the stone is still commonly used in love and sex magic. Lapis would be useful for any type of magic though, because it is said to increase your ability to draw natural magical power from the Earth and Sky as well as strengthening your psychic protection against negative energy. Touching Lapis Lazuli every day is reputed to ensure contentment and a comfortable life. Jewelry would be ideal for this purpose, though if you can afford lots of beautiful Lapis jewelry you might already have a comfortable life!

There are many Lapis Lazuli fakes and substitutes available, including dyed Howlite and blocks of reconstituted Lapis pressed together from the shavings and refuse of the stone-cutting industry. Genuine high-grade Lapis Lazuli has a rich, deep blue color and a relatively even distribution of bright, sparkling Pyrite inclusions.
