Sapphire

The name 'Sapphire' is derived from the Greek 'Sappheiros', which is from the Sanskrit 'Sanipriya' and literally means 'beloved of the planet Saturn'. Sapphire is a beautiful gemstone that forms in many shades, including blues ranging from pale lilac to deepest midnight as well as yellow, black, white and a rare red-orange colored variety.

Known as a 'peace-maker', Sapphire is reputed to create a harmonious atmosphere in any room it is kept in. It can help to calm anger and encourage people to talk freely about their differences and understand each other's point of view - it is even said that Sapphire can appease the anger of the Gods. The gemstone has been associated with the planetary energy of Saturn for thousands of years, and is used in magic for any matter that comes under the rulership of the Lord of Time, including land and property, hard work, the outdoors, history and ancient religions, time, age and grieving.

Sapphire is often used in magic to increase energy, fertility and the power to create. It is particularly useful for focusing and directing power and a good gem to keep near if you try any type of divination because it is said to increase your ability to see clearly into the future. According to mediaeval physicians, gazing into the gemstone would preserve good eyesight and it was also recommended as a cure for sleepwalking.

Meditation with Sapphire is said to encourage deep thoughts and contemplation while also improving your powers of telepathy, clairvoyance and astral projection. It can help you discover intuitive insights about your path in life, inspires 'chaste and pure thoughts' and helps you to focus on your spiritual goals. Keep a Sapphire in your magical area when working or meditating to draw out your spiritual Fire.

Different colors of Sapphire have been given different metaphysical properties over the centuries. Yellow Sapphire is said to bestow eloquence, Black Sapphire grants visions and secret knowledge, White Sapphire boosts confidence and brings unexpected support to your projects and a Star Sapphire, a stone cut to reflect light like a shining star, is said to protect its wearer from all harm. The rarest form of Sapphire, also considered by many to be the most spiritually powerful, is the flame colored Padparadschah or 'Lotus Flower' Sapphire.
